‘The Lord of Death and Midnight’ contains lyrics composed during a weeklong sojourn through the glorious land of old & (un)hallowed Transylvania. Ancient, forgotten graves and tombs were long pondered upon while the hazy silhouette of the ever darkening Carpathian Mountains were slowly enveloped by a wood-smoke filled twilight. The spirit of old war and half-forgotten legends can still be felt here. The dead keep their secrets, try as we may to peer beyond their veil.

The Lord of Death and Midnight

Behold the scorched carrion which illuminates graves,
sulphurous, nebulous ghosts.
A beacon to follow on cold winter nights,
in dreams I traverse this death maze.
The mountains are endless, the forest is black,
the devil’s song on the wind.
Eternally longing to embrace spectral realms,
My funeral awaits me at dawn.

Join the deathly Sabbath as the first born is led.
To the stone circle in this land of the dead.
The coffins lay strewn, their treasures laid bare,
Skeletons dance to the waltz of the dead.
The screaming, the howling from marble lined tombs,
The rebirth of evil in hollow earth wombs,
For horrors contained in this abyss of black souls,
Is naught compared to the sins of mankind.

See the churches laid low, the smouldering ruins around my feet.

Join the wretched Sabbath as the first born is led.
To the black altar in the land of the dead.
The bodies lay strewn, their secrets laid bare,
The devil he waits with temptation so fair.

The first 30 seconds of "Revenge by Fire" convinced me to get the whole album! It is a face-melting blend of speed and black metal, reminiscent of Hellripper! KVAEN is a Swedish solo project much like Hellripper but many known guest musicians helped J. Björnfot in his endeavor. Altogether it is really a solid debut album, I loved the melodies and the pace changes in the second half too, ending with a "calm" instrumental one. Well-done!! sachavonkarl74

Avec Панихида, Батюшка renaît enfin de ses cendres et, bien que désormais seul (ou plus exactement entouré de deux chanteurs), Христофор accomplit un miracle. Il s'inscrit dans la continuité de Литоургиiа avec un black metal orthodoxe qui nous convie ici à une cérémonie dédiée aux morts.
